SAVOUR THE CULTURAL FLAVOUR OF THE GARDEN CITY FESTIVAL

The Garden City Festival, an exciting celebration of local horticulture, produce and good food in South Manchester, takes place on Saturday 18th September from 11am to 4pm across Wythenshawe town centre and at the Forum and offers a great day out for all the family, with displays and attractions to entice all ages.

Following its inaugural success last year, this exciting initiative, which is supported by Manchester City Council, St. Modwen plc, Wythenshawe Forum Trust, Manchester Markets and South Manchester Healthy Living Network, will bring together a diverse and enticing array of products and presentations from a host of local traders and visiting stalls.

Keen gardeners can join the Q&A sessions with BBC Radio Manchester’s gardening expert Andy Hewitt, or check out the vegetable growing competition which the local schools have been involved in. There will also be displays from local allotments and horticultural societies along with floristry and other demonstrations. And don’t worry if you spot a white rabbit – he’s probably escaped from the Mad Hatter’s Tea Party which you’ll find at the Forum.

Foodies, meanwhile, can savour the tasty treats on offer from a host of well-known restaurants, market traders and local cookery groups, such as Spice Rack and the Authentic Food Company. You can also make a delicious smoothie to enjoy, and burn off the calories before you’ve even started with BlendaVenda – a bike that powers the blender to make your chosen concoction! If that sounds like hard work, don’t worry, there’s also an alcohol-free bar where you can drink the delicious wine without fear of a hangover.

Inspiring displays of arts and crafts will include ceramics, woodwork, calligraphy and willow-weaving, with interactive recycled art and pot painting workshops promising visitors of all ages the chance to learn new skills. Tots will adore the mini-farm, scarecrow display and majestic owls, whilst the children’s funfair will ensure a great day out for all the family.

Councillor Rosa Battle, assistant executive member for culture and leisure at Manchester City Council, commented, “Wythenshawe is known today as the garden of Manchester because so many people benefit from its vibrant green areas, allotments, local produce and all the benefits an outdoor lifestyle can bring. Garden City Festival is a celebration of the district’s original garden city heritage focusing on the parks, trees, green spaces and wildlife.”

Entrance and most activities are free so put the date in your diary and come and enjoy this fabulous festival. FOR A CHANCE TO WIN THE CONTENTS OF THE SMALL SHOW GARDEN, DOWNLOAD AN ENTRY FORM HERE
