The abundance of green space, parks and woodlands in Wythenshawe invites an outdoor lifestyle. The Trans Pennine Trail passes along the Mersey Valley through Northenden and the river hosts the annual Northenden Boat Race each August.
Wythenshawe is on the airport cycleway which consists of a series of new and improved on and off-road links, creating a high quality route through Wythenshawe from Manchester Airport to Roundthorn, Medipark, Wythenshawe Hospital and then via Brooks Drive and Brooklands Road to the Bridgewater Cycleway. The route is now complete. The scheme cost was £756,500 and is part of Manchester’s 12-year cycling strategy which will deliver a major new network of strategic, integrated and, where possible, segregated cycle routes to employment centres, schools and leisure facilities.
Wythenshawe Hospital (UHSM) is recognised as a centre of clinical excellence. It is a regional tertiary referral centre for specialities including heart, lung, burns and breast care. Adjacent to the hospital and as part of the Enterprise Zone, MediPark will be one of Manchester’s health and life science parks, combining research and development with integrated health and social care.
Achieving an active local population is seen as key to improving longer term health outcomes and residents of all ages benefit from programmes delivered by Active Lifestyles, Summersonic, Wythenshawe Games, local sports clubs and community centres. Wythenshawe has its own dedicated community sport activator working as part of a city-wide Active Manchester initiative.
