Wythenshawe Means Business
Manchester is the fastest growing city in the UK, with 65,000 new jobs expected to be created by 2036. Manchester City Council's Work and Skills Team has a central role in ensuring that residents benefit from these opportunities.
The team leads on citywide programmes that promote employment, skills and reducing dependency. Coordinating resource and expertise to engage with both national and regional economic initiatives, ensuring that the work and skills agenda is well connected across different services in the city and to our neighbourhoods.
In Wythenshawe, the Work and Skills Team collaborates with key partners to deliver projects through the Wythenshawe Skills and Employment Group (WSEG). The WSEG was established in 2018 to facilitate a locally-focused multi-agency approach to maximise the take-up of learning, training, employment support and job opportunities. It includes the following organisations:
- MCC Work and Skills Team
- Wythenshawe Forum Trust
- Manchester Adult Education
- Job Centre Plus
- Wythenshawe Community Housing Group
- BW3 (Business Working with Wythenshawe)
- Manchester Airport Group and The Airport Academy
- Manchester College
The partnership reduces duplication and enables co-ordination of activities. This gives the WSEG the ability to focus more creatively on improving outcomes for Wythenshawe residents.
Virgin Media Recruitment
WSEG supported Virgin Media with their recruitment drive for customer service roles at their regional office in Wythenshawe. A number of open days were held at Virgin Media for interested residents to give them an opportunity to find out more about the roles and working for Virgin. WSEG worked closely with Virgin Media to streamline their recruitment process, making it more accessible for residents further away from the labour market. In total 61 local residents attend the two open days with 67% of these residents registering an interest. 44% of the residents that attended a Virgin Media assessment centre secured employment with Virgin.
